Rock for Recovery

Interactive Poster

Art Direction: Scott Laserow

Overview

For this project, I conceptualized a music festival that was fundraising for a cause and then created an interactive poster to promote the event. The challenge with this project was that although the poster was interactive, it also needed to give all of the required information as a static poster as well. For my event, I created the Rock for Recovery festival that includes four rock bands hosting a concert to raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Approach

I felt that one of the best ways to get people interested in the event was to show them the bands that they could see live – this meant figuring out a way to incorporate performance footage into the poster. I created this interaction through the cut out of the header type because I felt it was necessary not to obstruct the view of the rest of the poster in order to show the viewer which band they were looking at and listening to.

Research and Process

Using Spotify playlists, I paired bands together to see how they would sound as a lineup and selected groups accordingly. After deciding on a solid direction, I did visual research to understand how to make a rock poster that looked like a rock poster. Looking at posters with psychedelic and art nouveau influences, I began to understand the components that I needed to carry into my own work and began to sketch. This poster required multiple rounds of hand drawing type as well as a lot of play with color to get the desired psychedelic appearance.
